Hunkers y Barnburners
Dos facciones del Partido Demócrata en el estado de Nueva York, en el siglo XIX. El partido se dividió en la década de 1840 por diferencias respecto de la esclavitud.

Los conservadores Hunkers (llamados así por sus opositores porque anhelaban los cargos públicos), con William Marcy a la cabeza, apoyaban la anexión de Texas y criticaban la agitación antiesclavista. Los radicales reformistas Barnburners (así calificados por sus opositores porque quemaban el granero para eliminar los ratones), encabezados por Martin Van Buren, se oponían a extender la esclavitud a los nuevos territorios. En la convención nacional demócrata de 1848, los Barnburners se juntaron con el Partido Free Soil y nombraron a Van Buren candidato a presidente. Durante la década de 1850, ciertos Barnburners volvieron al Partido Demócrata y otros, en cambio, ingresaron al nuevo Partido Republicano.
